Authors: Robert J. Wang, Charles Ling, Boyu Wang

    Executive Summary

The research introduces CoReMatch, a new approach to feature matching that is essential for various robotic perception tasks such as visual localization, mapping, and autonomous navigation. Traditional semi-dense matchers operate on fixed grids, which restricts their ability to identify correspondences to predetermined locations. This method also necessitates high-resolution grids, making it costly and less efficient, particularly for real-time applications.

CoReMatch offers a significant advancement by refining correspondences in continuous coordinate space rather than relying on discrete confidence maps. This allows for more flexibility and precision in matching features. The framework uses a recurrent method to iteratively improve correspondence estimates. Initially, it employs a Deep Aggregated Transformer that captures the global context of the scene, then progressively updates the correspondence coordinates. A lightweight regression head is used in the later stages to enhance localization accuracy further.

The research findings indicate that CoReMatch performs well on both indoor and outdoor benchmarks, demonstrating its effectiveness in real-world conditions. It outperforms an existing method, Efficient LoFTR, in terms of accuracy while being over ten times faster on embedded edge hardware. This speed and efficiency make CoReMatch a strong candidate for integration into robotic systems that require real-time processing capabilities.

The implications of these results are significant for industries that rely on robotic perception. CoReMatch could enhance the performance of autonomous vehicles, drones, and other robotics applications where real-time feature matching is crucial. By improving both accuracy and processing speed, this technology may enable more sophisticated and reliable autonomous systems. Ultimately, the ability to perform efficient feature matching in real-time could lead to advancements in how robots perceive and interact with their environments.

    Academic Abstract

Feature matching underpins many robotic perception tasks, including visual localization, mapping, SLAM, and autonomous navigation. Existing semi-dense matchers predict confidence on fixed grids, limiting correspondences to predefined locations and requiring costly high-resolution grids for precise localization. We present CoReMatch (Coordinate Refinement Match), a recurrent framework that refines correspondences directly in continuous coordinate space rather than predicting discrete confidence maps. CoReMatch progressively improves correspondence estimates by propagating information across iterations. At the coarse stage, a Deep Aggregated Transformer captures global context and iteratively updates correspondence coordinates, while a lightweight regression head further sharpens their localization. Experiments on indoor and outdoor benchmarks show that CoReMatch strikes a strong balance between accuracy and efficiency, outperforming Efficient LoFTR in accuracy while running more than 10x faster on embedded edge hardware. These results demonstrate that recurrent coordinate refinement offers an efficient and scalable approach to real-time feature matching for robotic perception.
