    Executive Summary

The research introduces VerifiedLab, a framework designed to facilitate the transition of knowledge from human-readable records to formats that machines can effectively utilize. This evolution is critical as AI systems increasingly take on roles in research and experimentation. VerifiedLab aims to enhance how research findings are documented, ensuring that these findings can be actively used and understood by AI systems, rather than serving merely as passive data.

VerifiedLab operates as a multi-agent system where a team of AI specialists takes on distinct roles to ensure the reliability and applicability of research outputs. The framework includes a principal investigator who oversees planning, a librarian who extracts and computes evidence from the existing records, and specialists who draft the findings. Additionally, there are mechanisms in place to check the reliability of claims made by the AI, ensuring that only verified information is shared for further use. This structured approach allows for rigorous verification of data before it is disseminated, addressing potential concerns regarding the accuracy and trustworthiness of AI-generated outputs.

The research demonstrates the effectiveness of VerifiedLab through simulations focused on perovskite solar cells, a significant area in renewable energy. The experiments showed that VerifiedLab could accurately recover established physical trends and predict developments in solar cell technology that were reported up to a year later. This capability suggests that VerifiedLab not only compiles existing knowledge but also enhances predictive power, enabling AI scientists to build on prior work with a clear understanding of the information's reliability.

The implications of this research are substantial for industries that rely on scientific data and innovation. VerifiedLab could streamline the process of knowledge dissemination, making it easier for organizations to adopt new findings and integrate them into their operations. By ensuring that AI systems can inherit and assess the literature, companies may improve their research and development efforts, leading to faster innovation cycles and more informed decision-making.

While the results are based on simulations rather than real-world applications, the framework presents a promising avenue for how knowledge can be effectively shared between human researchers and AI systems. This could ultimately lead to more sophisticated AI tools that act as co-scientists, enhancing both the speed and accuracy of scientific discovery across various fields.

    Academic Abstract

Across human history, knowledge has undergone several transitions, from orality to writing and then to digital archives. At each transition, humans established new conventions to preserve knowledge for the new era. Nowadays, as research agents are increasingly deployed for laboratory experiments, knowledge is crossing another boundary: from records written for humans to those for machines. In this work, we introduce VerifiedLab, a multi-agent harness framework for this human-to-machine transition of knowledge. VerifiedLab transforms research output from passive artifacts into active systems that accelerate downstream use, adoption and prediction of future trends. In VerifiedLab, a team of AI scientists with distinct roles reasons over records verified field by field: a principal investigator plans, a librarian computes the evidence directly from the records, specialists draft, and a gate and a critic check each claim against the measured reliability of its data before the harness decides whether to release or withhold it. We demonstrate the efficacy of VerifiedLab through extensive experiments on perovskite solar cells: VerifiedLab recovers known physical trends, anticipates devices reported a year later, and lets AI scientists inherit the literature together with a measure of how far it can be trusted. By scaling the inference-time verification compute, VerifiedLab introduces a new pathway for knowledge dissemination and machine harness for AI co-scientists.
