MIT's new $1 Billion Artificial Intelligence college

M.I.T. is preparing by creating a new college backed by a planned investment of $1 billion.

The new college will teach the theory and ethics of AI. MIT is committing $1 billion to focus on the "ethical evolution" of AI that is already affecting and shaping our society in order to be a global leader in this popular field.

The College will reorient MIT to bring the power of computing and AI to all fields of study at MIT, allowing the future of computing and AI to be shaped by insights from all other disciplines;

It is scheduled to begin in the fall semester of 2019 in the current M.I.T campuses. With the program moving into its own new space in 2022.

The MIT Schwarzman College of Computing will work with and across all five of MIT’s existing schools. Its naming as a college differentiates it from the five schools, and signals that it is an Institute-wide entity: The College is designed with cross-cutting education and research as its primary missions.

The M.I.T. move might trigger others to invest in America’s A.I. future.
