Thinking Machines Lab

Thinking Machines Lab is an American artificial intelligence research and product company founded in February 2025 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, where it is organized as a public benefit corporation. It was co-founded by Mira Murati, the former chief technology officer of OpenAI, together with a team of researchers and engineers drawn largely from OpenAI and other leading AI labs, including John Schulman and Barret Zoph. The company focuses on building AI systems that are more customizable, capable, and understandable, with an emphasis on multimodal models and tools that let people adapt AI to their own needs. In 2025 it raised roughly $2 billion in an early-stage funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, one of the largest seed rounds on record, at a valuation of about $12 billion. Its early products include Tinker, a tool for fine-tuning language models.
